Happy Friday!

September 25, 2020
By Jenny Blalock

Dear Bullpup families,

Happy Friday and welcome to the weekend.  I am often asked by thoughtful parents, “How’s it going?” and “How are you all doing?”  Well, I am pleased to report we are “Hanging in there!”  That is the theme for this year that you have likely seen on our faculty “Life is Good” tee shirts.  The teachers, faculty, staff, and students have handled this challenging year like champs.  Is it difficult? Absolutely.  But, I am so very proud of the people that make up AEP.  We are all glad to be back together.  The student body has a joy about them that warms my heart.

I would like to provide you an update on the status of our school in regards to COVID-19.  We have had a very small number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 thus far, and we have not seen student-to-student transmission in our classrooms.  The faculty and staff are doing an outstanding job meeting the safety protocols set by the Louisiana Department of Education.  I have attached the updated decision tree that is used when making decisions regarding quarantine.  I realize that quarantining is very stressful and extremely inconvenient.  Please know that I am following guidelines, and choosing to err on the side of caution while working through each case carefully with student and teacher safety as my top priority.  I appreciate your understanding, patience, and graciousness with me as I am faced with difficult decisions to quarantine students.

We will continue to offer virtual learning throughout the school year for those students and their families who would like to stay home due to health concerns.  For all others, we strongly encourage your consideration of returning to school.  No matter the caliber of virtual learning, there is simply no replacement for the learning that takes place in the classroom.  Despite all the differences this school year brought, our “new normal” is strangely beginning to feel “normal.”  Finally, I have one request.  As you have time, please let your child’s teacher know they are appreciated.  They are proving to be educational rock-stars!

With gratitude,
Jenny

Dear AEP families,

Thank you for your support as we have successfully reopened AEP for the 2020-2021 school year!  What an interesting start it’s been!  Despite all of the challenges, changes, and new protocols, learning is taking place and smiles are all over campus.  It is great to have our students back!  The students also seem happier than ever to be here.  Yesterday, Governor Edwards announced that our state is now moving to Phase 3.  At this time, AEP will continue to operate under the same protocols as we have in Phase 2.  I believe that the safety protocols are helping to protect our students and staff.  As we continue through the 1st nine-weeks of school, we will methodically and gradually move to Phase 3.  In Phase 3, students may gather in larger groups (no more than 50), buses can hold more passengers, and classes, such as music, can resume certain activities.

I cannot conclude without recognizing the significance of today… Patriot Day.  I watched the 5th graders raised the flag to half-mast, as members of the Ruston Fire Department looked on as well.  We look forward to sharing photos from our adapted Patriot Day recognition.  Thank you to all parents who serve our community.  This Bullpup family is a blessing.

With gratitude,

Jenny

Dear Bullpup families,
What a summer it has been! I hope this email finds you well. The AEP faculty and staff are ready to welcome your students in-person or virtually! I know this academic year brings much uncertainty and anxiety, but I want you to know that we are committed to keeping your children safe and are confident that this will be a wonderful school year! A. E. Phillips is known for its innovation and positive approach to learning. We are committed to demonstrating this is true, even in difficult circumstances. Your teachers have been working very hard to prepare for the students’ arrival, and we are more eager than ever to see our Pups! We’ve missed them! You will soon be receiving information from your child’s teacher as well as information on the Meet-the-Teacher days. We are striving to pass along information as soon as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience, understanding, support, and encouragement. We are in this together.
With gratitude,
Jenny

A. E. Phillips Laboratory School was founded in 1917 as a model school on the beautiful campus of Louisiana Tech University.  Today, the 100-year tradition of excellence continues.  A. E. Phillips is located adjacent to the College of Education, and its proximity is emblematic of the internal, rich collaboration between the institution of higher learning and its laboratory school.  A. E. Phillips is a K-8 school that has earned the distinction of an “A” rating by the Louisiana Department of Education.  We are extremely proud of the high academic achievement of our students, and our tradition of emphasis on the arts.  Our knowledgeable faculty members have earned advanced degrees and certifications and serve as hosts to teacher candidates from the College of Education.  We value the support of our wonderful Bullpup families and the importance of a positive and engaging learning environment that promotes a love of learning for our students.  In the words of Andy Eugene Phillips, “School should be a happy place.”  At A. E. Phillips Laboratory School, we are inspired by our past with a vision for our future.
